Danish EPA: Plastic Bags have Lowest Environmental Impact

    The Danish Environmental Protection Agency has published a study that analyses the life cycle environmental impacts of production, use and disposal of grocery carrier bags currently available in Danish supermarkets. The aim of the study being was to identify the bag with the best environmental performance, the recommended number of reuses and the best disposal option of a grocery bag.

    Reflections from the EU Environmental Footprint Final Conference

    Over the past few years, the European Commission has run a pilot on their Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) and Organisational Environmental Footprint (OEF) projects. The EU Environmental Footprint Final Conference, which took place from 23 – 25 April 2018 in Brussels, Belgium, brought together a wide range of stakeholders to discuss the progress of and vision for PEF.

    The Australian Government’s National Carbon Offset Standard streamlines carbon neutral certification for products with an Australasian EPD

    The Australian Government Department of the Environment and Energy and the Australasian EPD Programme are pleased to announce that Australasian Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) can now utilise a streamlined carbon neutral certification process. This will make it much easier and more cost-effective for businesses that are developing or have developed an EPD to also achieve carbon neutral certification.

    Absolute Sustainability Research

    NZLCM Centre student Chanjief Chandrakumar and supervisor Professor Sarah McLaren have published an article on development of indicators for an absolute sustainability approach to support Earth System Governance. Published in Ecological Indicators, the article is available free of charge until 25th May 2018 at the link below.

    FSLCI Publishes Workshop Report on Life Cycle Education

    FSLCI has published the workshop report from the first stakeholder meeting of their Academic Partnership Program which focuses specifically on life cycle education in the context of higher education at universities. The Program brings together academic groups from around the world which are interested in sharing their respective knowledge and collaborate on the subject.

    New EPD Hubs and Programmes in Brazil, India and Ireland

    New regional hubs for local support, registration and promotion of EPDs have been established in Brazil and India. They join New Zealand and Australia (Australasian EPD Programme), Chile and Mexico (EPD Latin America) and Turkey (EPD Turkey) as part of the International EPD System.

    UN Environment Launches Technical Help Desk for LCA Databases

    The LCA Databases helpdesk is now online. The Technical Helpdesk for LCA Databases is a new forum for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data experts, developers of new national databases, managers of existing databases, and other interested individuals. The ‘Technical Helpdesk’ provides stakeholders wishing to establish and operate LCA databases with both training and support by international experts.

    Call for Abstracts for the OECD/CRP Sponsored Circular Economy for Agri-Food Resource Management (CEARM), Seoul, South Korea, June 13-15, 2018

    The organisers of the OECD/CRP Sponsored Circular Economy for Agri-Food Resource Management  (CEARM) have issued a Call for Abstracts. The conference is being supported by universities in Asia-Pacific region: University of Queensland, Seoul National University and CSIRO/ANU. The conference will be at Seoul National University, South Korea, June 13-15, 2018.

    Environmental Assessment and Management in the Food Industry: New Study

     A new published study discusses the environmental impact of food production and processing, addressing issues such as nutrient management and water efficiency in agriculture. It also covers LCA methodology and challenges, with chapters focusing on different food industry sectors such as crop production, livestock and aquaculture.
