Electric cars can become more eco-friendly through life cycle assessment

It is time to stop discussing whether electric cars are good or bad. Instead industry, authorities and policy-makers need to work together to make them as eco-friendly as possible. This is the view taken by Anders Nordelöf, a researcher at Chalmers University of Technology. In a recent thesis, he provides concrete advice and tools showing how life cycle assessment can assist in the development of electric cars.

Bio-methane transforms from landfill waste to energy source

Repurposing wasted methane gas is the focus of a new study published in the journal Environmental Progress and Sustainable Energy (DOI: 10.1002/ep.12762) by chemical engineers from Michigan Technological University. Specifically, they examined the carbon footprint of anaerobic digestion—composting organics without air—which can be used to redirect methane into a usable energy source.

Researchers develop method to quantify life cycle land use of natural gas

A case study of the Barnett Shale region in Texas, where hydraulic fracturing was first implemented, for the first time provides quantifiable information on the life cycle land use of generating electricity from natural gas based on physical measurements instead of using assumptions and averages that were previously used for evaluation.

PhD. Candidate job posting: Life cycle assessment of soil based options for greenhouse gas removal

This PhD studentship is part of the NERC-funded Soils-R-GGREAT project. The PhD focuses on the consequential Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of managing agricultural and forestry systems including the use of biochar for greenhouse gas removal from the atmosphere (GGRA) through increased soil carbon.

Bombardier receives second environmental product declaration for its C Series Aircraft

Bombardier Commercial Aircraft has announced today at the Global Sustainable Aviation Summit in Geneva the publication of the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for the CS300 aircraft. The news was made public one year after the CS100 aircraft received the same certification. No other aircraft manufacturer discloses the full environmental impact of their products.

AI launch EPDs for specialist concrete products

AGGREGATE Industries have partnered with BASF Construction Chemicals to create a suite of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) to provide clients with detailed information on the environmental impact of their ready-mixed concrete, and to encourage the implementation of sustainable solutions.

Assessing and promoting biodiversity requires collaboration throughout the value chain

UPM Raflatac has partnered with Quantis and Nestle Research Centre to study and capture the biodiversity impacts of forestry practices in life cycle assessment. The study shows how biodiversity in the boreal forest can be captured in LCA, allowing users of wood fibre-based products to differentiate between alternative sources of fibre and inform responsible sourcing decision making.

How to benefit from the global growth and harmonisation of EPDs

The global hype around Environmental Product Declarations is gathering momentum as businesses and governments demand to understand how their procurement choices impact on the environment. Following are some of the trends surrounding EPDs and the opportunities on offer discussed during a webinar with expert Jane Anderson, principal consultant with thinkstep in the UK, Stephen Mitchell, chair of the Australasian EPD Programme and Barbara Nebel, managing director of thinkstep in Australasia.
