Dr James Fava has spent over 40 years supporting businesses and governments to understand the risks and opportunities facing them, and providing guidance, tools, know-how on strategies and actions to enable them to operate in a more environmentally responsible (initially) and now sustainable fashion. As Executive Director at Anthesis Group, Jim continues with this purpose, passion, and actions to drive business value (increased revenue, mitigate risks, enhance brand, and reduce costs) from operating sustainably.
Dr Fava has been called the ‘father of modern-day life cycle assessment’. Jim has spent over 30 years promoting and developing the practice and application of life cycle information to support decision making globally. He played key roles in the SETAC, ISO, UNEP-SETAC Life cycle initiative, and the Forum for Sustainability through Life Cycle Innovation. He was awarded ACLCA’s Life time achievement award recently. During his award remarks, he challenged the community to ‘rebrand LCA’, which generated awesome excitement to understand and action.
Additionally, he co-founded or founded Five Winds International in 1998, which grew from 4 professionals to over 150 with merger with PE (now thinkstep) in 2012 in NA, Europe, Africa, Aust/Asia, and India; the Product Sustainability Roundtable (PSRT) in 1993. The PSRT continually brings together the product sustainability leaders of the world’s most respected companies, from across the value chain, in a non-competitive environment to provide support, benchmarking, and best practice advice to their product-oriented programs to drive organization change to realize business value – http://anthesisgroup.com/important-milestone-psrt/.
His exceptional communication and facilitation expertise have led him to chair several advisory groups and committees and contributed chapters to several books. Widely published and quoted, Dr. Fava is regularly invited to speak at engagements throughout the world.
Jim and his wife Jane live in Dominical, Costa Rica, focusing on ‘retirement in training’, with interest to continue to use his experience to expand the demand for sustainability excellence and enhance positive sustainability impact and business performance, what Jim is calling ‘rebranding LCA’.
