Join us for the 2024 LCANZ Summit at GridAKL in the Wynyard Quarter, Auckland on
2nd of May 2024 from 1pm to 6pm. Click here to register.
The theme for the Summit is Supporting Sustainability with Life Cycle Approaches.
Our speakers will discuss how approaches such as Life Cycle Thinking, Life Cycle Management, and Life Cycle Assessment support and guide their sustainability journey, both at a strategic and operational levels.
They will give insights on national and international trends, as well as current examples of what is already happening in New Zealand.
We have speakers from The Planetary Accounting Network, thinkstep-anz, Zespri, Toitū Envirocare, Geo40, Mint, Aurecon, and more to be confirmed.
Venue
The Summit will be on the ground floor of the John Lysaght Building, GridAKL 101 Pakenham Street, Auckland. See the GridAKL’s advice for getting there. Please do use public transport if possible. For those that do need to drive, the Wynyard carpark on the corner of Halsey and Pakenham St West is best placed for the venue.

Kate Meyer – Planetary facts
Imagine if it was easy to access, understand, and communicate the environmental performance of products, beyond carbon, in context. With Planetary Facts you can. Inspired by Nutritional Facts which communicate data such as protein, fat, and carbohydrates in the context of a recommended daily intake for good health, Planetary Facts communicate critical environmental data such as carbon, water, and biodiversity footprints in the context of recommended environmental limits for a healthy planet.
Kate is the creator of Planetary Accounting a peer-reviewed framework that contextualises environmental accounting. She is the Founder/CEO of the Planetary Accounting Network and Planetary Insights, and a Director on the Destination Southern Lakes board. Kate has led many award-winning projects and taken on leadership roles such as Sustainability Director at Beca. Her work has been acknowledged in platforms from TedX to the Deloitte Top200 Sustainability Leadership Awards to Auckland University’s 40Under40 awards.
Alan Brent – Life cycle assessments to inform the sustainability of our energy transition
Our required energy transition means the uptake of more renewable energy with a variety of storage options to balance the variability in generation. This presentation will provide an overview of what the energy transition my entail over the coming decades,and how the formal life cycle assessment approach can contribute to understanding the environmental implications, and the interventions needed to address the challenges we face.
Alan Brent is the inaugural chair in Sustainable Energy Systems in the Wellington Faculty of Engineering of Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington. He is a Fellow of Engineering New Zealand, and an executive committee member of The Sustainability Society. He has been active in the Life Cycle Assessment domain for over two decades.
Zespri – How Zespri used an LCA approach to assess carbon emissions and shape climate strategy in the kiwifruit industry.
Summary – Zespri is the world’s largest marketer of kiwifruit, selling kiwifruit in more than 50 countries. A strategic priority for Zespri is a future-led sustainable industry, and within that is a major focus on decarbonising its supply chain. This presentation will provide an overview of the carbon measurement that Zespri has led in the kiwifruit industry over the last 15 years, the drivers behind this action and its outcomes.
Speaker Bio – Dr Jayson Benge is the Environment Sustainability Specialist in Zespri’s global Sustainability Team. He has 20 years of experience working on sustainability projects, largely in the kiwifruit sector. Jayson has been involved in much of the previous carbon measurement across Zespri’s supply chain and has worked with various LCA experts along the way such as ThinkStep, Catalyst and Agrilink.
Aurecon – Supporting Sustainability with Life Cycle Approaches: Life cycle thinking -Keeping the complex simple
Eloise and Carlos will discuss three key recent projects where life cycle thinking approach has been applied to city shaping infrastructure and building design, as well as to inform policy development within government. Aurecon’s speakers are specialist advisers in the sustainability and climate change arena. Working closely with our engineering teams and clients, our advisers are at the forefront of working to truly deliver a more sustainable built environment.
Speaker Bios
Eloise Blewden, Sustainability Engineer, Buildings team at Aurecon, is a Master of Architecture graduate, former New Zealand Green Building Council’s Future Thinker of the Year Winner and a Green Star Accredited Professional (GSAP). She has experience on Life Cycle Assessments for commercial and public buildings, with specific understanding of embodied carbon.
Carlos Kershaw, Senior Consultant, Sustainability and Climate change at Aurecon is a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering with Honours graduate. He has applied the principles of Life Cycle Thinking to inform decision making, as well as carbon management for major infrastructure projects, environmental and broader outcomes digital tools development, and authored EPDs.
Toitū – How to move towards sustainable agricultural products for NZ
Summary – In this presentation, Toitū Envirocare will discuss the carbon foot printing of Silver Fern Farms products, including lamb, beef, venison, and leather. Silver Fern Farm’s has a target of reducing scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% by 2030, from a base year of 2020, aligned with limiting global warming to 1.5degrees. They have also committed to phasing out coal by 2030.
Speaker Bio
Abbas Tamadon, Senior Advisor –LCA & Tools, has over 5 years of extensive LCA experience across research academia and industry. He leads LCA projects in construction, manufacturing, food, and agriculture sectors, focusing on product carbon footprint, EPD, and Circularity. He also develops LCA methodology guidelines and product footprint specifications.
Diana Hawkins, Senior Advisor –Primary Sector and Waste, joined Toitū in 2022, working with product, event, and fitout programme clients to measure and reduce their carbon emissions and prepare for verification under Toitū’s carbon programmes.She has over fifteen years’ experience in project management, scientific research, science communication, and viticulture. She provides guidance, advice, and support agriculture and horticulture clients.
thinkstep-anz – Developing an EPD for pioneering mineral recovery company Geo40
Summary – Geo40 recovers valuable minerals from geothermal fluids, creating specialty chemical products with a much lower carbon footprint than industry norms. Together with thinkstep-anz, Geo40hasdeveloped an EPD for 1430Na, a specific grade of colloidal silica that is widely used by many industries as a filler, binder, viscosity modifier amongst many different applications.The EPD allows Geo40 to communicate the product’s verified environmental impacts to industry partners looking to decarbonise their supply chain.
Che Kranenburg, Geo40 – Product & Development Manager: an accomplished environmental scientist studying and working across New Zealand and Australia, with over 15 years of experience across consulting, sales, civil development and oil and gas roles, Che leads the application and sales of Geo40’s products into environmental, civil development and heavy industry markets.
Noa Meron, thinkstep-anz – Team Lead LCA – Noa has over 12 years of experience in environmental consulting and LCA, including comparative and consequential LCAs. Her experience ranges from product and packaging design to technology and building materials. She is skilled at creating calculators and programming scripts to help make sense of sustainability data.
