Submission to MfE Consultation: Reducing the impact of plastic on our environment

LCANZ is preparing a submission to the MfE Consultation: Reducing the impact of plastic on our environment – moving away from hard-to-recycle and single use items.

The Ministry for Environment has announced a consultation on banning some problematic plastic types and some single use plastic items. There are two proposals:

  1. banning some hard-to-recycle plastic types, including:
    1. some polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polystyrene packaging
    2. all oxo-degradable plastics
  2. banning seven single-use plastic items including:
    1. plastic straws
    2. plastic cotton buds
    3. plastic drink stirrers
    4. single-use plastic produce bags (both plastic and composable)
    5. single-use plastic tableware (e.g. plates, bowls, cutlery)
    6. single-use cups and lids (not including disposable coffee cups) made from hard-to-recycle plastics
    7. non-compostable fruit stickers

The consultation closes 4th December. LCANZ will be engaging with our members, as per our formal process. If you would like to get involved, please contact secretary@lcanz.org.nz.
