Two PhD Scholarships in Life Cycle Assessment and Management for the Building Sector

The New Zealand Life Cycle Management Centre is offering two exciting opportunities to outstanding candidates with research interests in Life Cycle Management and its application to the building sector. You will study for a PhD at Massey University in association with the Building Research Association of New Zealand (BRANZ).

The PhDs are funded through a BRANZ Scholarship (obtained with support from the Building Research Levy) comprising a tax-exempt stipend of $25,000 per annum for three years of study. The PhD research will be integrated with a building environmental assessment project being undertaken at BRANZ over the next three years, and so there will be opportunities for practical application of the research results in the building sector.

The PhD research topics are:

  1. Use of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to evaluate strategies for refurbishment of New Zealand offices.
  2. Enablers and barriers for New Zealand Small to Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the building and construction sector to engage with environmental profiling.

Applications are invited from candidates interested in the relationship between the building sector and the environment. For both topics, you will have achieved a Master’s or an undergraduate degree (minimum 2:1 Honours) in a relevant subject area.  Candidates should have good communication skills, a proven ability to undertake interdisciplinary research, and the initiative and drive to complete their studies in three years.

The scholarships will begin as soon as possible in 2013. The application form is available for download here
